چکیده

All-sky thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) maps are presented for assessing how well the Planck mission can find and characterise clusters of galaxies, especially in the presence of primary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and various galactic and ecliptic foregrounds. The maps have been constructed from numerical simulations of structure formation in a standard ΛCDM cosmology and contain all clusters out to redshifts of z = 1.46 with masses exceeding 5 × 10M⊙/h. By construction, the maps properly account for the evolution of cosmic structure, the halo-halo correlation function, the evolving mass function, halo substructure and adiabatic gas physics. The velocities in the kinetic map correspond to the actual density environment at the cluster positions. We characterise the SZ-cluster sample by measuring the distribution of angular sizes, the integrated thermal and kinetic Comptonisations, the source counts in the three relevant Planck-channels, and give the angular power-spectra of the SZ-sky. While our results are broadly consistent with simple estimates based on scaling relations and spherically symmetric cluster models, some significant differences are seen which may affect the number of cluster detectable by Planck.

Detecting Sunyaev-Zel’dovich clusters with Planck: III. Properties of the expected SZ-cluster sample

The Planck mission is the most sensitive all-sky submillimetric mission currently being planned and prepared. Special emphasis is given to the observation of clusters of galaxies by their thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. In this work, the results of a simulation are presented that combines all-sky maps of the thermal and kinetic SZ-effect with cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuatio...

Filtering techniques for the detection of Sunyaev - Zel ’ dovich clusters in multifrequency CMB maps

The problem of detecting Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) clusters in multifrequency CMB observations is investigated using a number of filtering techniques. A multifilter approach is introduced, which optimizes the detection of SZ clusters on microwave maps. An alternative method is also investigated, in which maps at different frequencies are combined in an optimal manner so that existing filtering te...

Observing the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect Closer to Home

Hot gas trapped in a dark matter halo will produce a decrement in the surface brightness of the microwave background, the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. While massive clusters produce the strongest central SZ decrements, we point out that a local galaxy halo, specifically the halo of M31, may be one of the brightest integrated SZ sources in the sky. For various realistic gas distributions cons...

The imprints of local superclusters on the Sunyaev - Zel ’ dovich signals and their detectability with Planck

We use high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of large-scale structure formation to study the imprints of the local superclusters onto the full-sky Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) signals. Following Mathis et al. (2002), the initial conditions have been statistically constrained to reproduce the density field within a sphere of 110 Mpc around the Milky Way, as observed in the IRAS 1.2-Jy all-sky re...

The Effect of Bandpass Uncertainties on Component Separation

Multi-frequency measurements of the microwave sky can be decomposed into maps of distinct physical components such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. Each of the multi–frequency measurements is a convolution of the spectrum on the sky with the bandpass of the instrument. Here we analytically calculate the contamination of the component maps that can...
